How long does it take to hike Chasm Lake?
Challenge Level: Very Difficult, 9 Miles, 2,500′ Elevation, 5-6 Hours. I’ve stopped short of the maximum challenge rating on Chasm Lake only because most of the trail surface is pretty easy as this is a popular trail. However, the bit of rock scramble at the very end to the lake make this a very tough hike.
Do you need a permit to hike to Chasm Lake?
Directions & Parking Climb up and towards the end turn left to reach the parking. You will need to procure a backcountry permit for overnight parking here. There are no day hike parking fees here. There are bathrooms at the trailhead.
Do you need timed entry for Chasm Lake?

Can you swim in Chasm Lake Colorado?
Chasm Lake is beautiful and is just below Long’s Peak, making it a wonderful spot to eat lunch before heading back down. The water is very cold even in August but I have seen people getting in for a couple of minutes and swimming. A must do hike in the RMNP. One of my favorite hikes.

Chasm Lake is not one of Rocky Mountain’s best lakes for fly fishing. While it is usually fishable from June to October, the deep lake yields few cutthroat trout. Most fishermen feel it’s a waste of time to hike to the lake.

Glacial Period In the higher valleys, snow packed into glacial ice which flowed down the valleys. Glacial erosion changed V-shaped valleys into U-shaped valleys. Similar glaciers were melting in areas now called Glacier Basin, Horseshoe Park and Kawuneeche Valley. Chasm Lake lies in a glacial cirque.
