You might have read in blog posts before that I really love a picture book and boy did I fall head over heals for Oliver Jeffers latest offering “Here We Are – Note for living on Planet Earth“.

He wrote this book for his first child to try and help explain the world in the best way he could – through his whimsical pictures, great humor, and it all comes straight from the heart. He felt the various topics he highlights in this book were the things his son needed to know about the world, and I think he hit it out of the park.FullSizeRender-01

A few of my favorite lines are:

“On our planet, there are people. One people is a person. You are a person. You have a body. Look after it, as most bits don’t grow back.”

“Though we have come a long way, we haven’t quite worked everything out, so there is plenty left for you to do. You will figure lots of things out for yourself. Just remember to leave notes for everyone else.”

There is a wonderful tenderness and loveliness about this picture book. The first time (and I am not embarrassed to say, subsequent times) I broke down in tears at the end of the book – it is so heartwarming. It just hit me how I want the world to show what he has in his book and I want our children to experience these things. It is reassuring and teaches gentle lessons, even about sleeping and how we do that when it is dark and when it is light we are awake. It talks about sometimes life is slow and sometimes it is fast, that we have one earth and we need to be gentle. And most importantly that we are never alone. It is everything you want your kids to know. I love all of the fun little comments hidden in plain sight as well (like the dodo!).

This is a book my 10 year old and I sit and read together often and I will be giving as gifts from here on out to all of the kids in my life. I have been recommending this book to our favorite preschool and teachers and families and we highly recommend this book to you too!
