Book Review: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

We have season tickets to the Oregon Children’s Theater plays. They are wonderful and often introduce us to new books and characters. One such book was The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

This is the story of a China rabbit called Edward Tulane and he is given to a girl named Abilene. She loves the rabbit and he really loves himself. Her family is going to England on a big ship and some boys decide to be mean and take him from Abilene, and he ends up going overboard. This is where Edwards Journey begins and he bounces from one place to another and as his heart grows he learns to love more than just himself.

We have the book pictured above and there are a few illustrations in it, which are all beautiful and hearken back to my childhood times and before. Everything about it is just lovely.

The story is so gorgeous and touching. There is a death in the book, so if you have a child sensitive to that it is something to be aware of. It isn’t gruesome, but sad.

We fell in love with the story and the lessons it teaches about love and kindness, and when we saw the play we fell more in love.

I highly recommend reading this book with your children. It will be one of the books that will stay on my shelf always.
